About Puppy Training
When you take your puppy home, (s)he needs a bit of time on the first day, to sniff, find out all about the new environment, but training should start as soon as possible.
Puppies learn by habit, so if you allow pup to wee all around the house, puppy is learning this as a habit and you will make toilet training harder.
From day 1, puppy needs to learn to settle alone and the best place for this is a crate. Many breeders use crates these days so pup is probably used to a crate, but if not, you need to train it. You can get a crate training sheet here.
Teaching puppy to settle alone helps to be sure you don’t get a puppy with separation anxiety. Separation anxiety can be extremely stressful for both you and your pup. Download my free eBook.
Puppy training should start straight away
There is a lot of training to do at home, but you should start preparing for your puppy training class too. Outdoor training, we believe is the best option for training a puppy, so puppy will need vaccinations before going to class.
Any professional school will let you book a place early and if vaccinations don’t work out, allow you to change to a different start date.
If you book our 6 week training course you get immediate access to our Wednesday evening Q & A sessions online and some starter training by video along with our full puppy eBook.

Cost of Training your Puppy
We’ve had people ring us up about training classes and say they can’t afford it! Puppies are not cheap so in the greater scheme of things puppy training is peanuts. The value of puppy training should be as important as your health and veterinary care.
A poorly trained puppy becomes an out of control dog. These are the dogs that end up in shelters. Heartbreak all round for everyone.
Schools all charge differeint amounts for training classes. Our 6 week programme is £155 including VAT. Don’t just go to the closest and the cheapest.
Remember to take into account further training beyond puppy class. It’s important to get your pup beyond adolescence with support. It can all seem to be going well, then suddenly you have a teenager on your hands and it all falls apart. We’ve all been there!
Puppy Training is very Important
On that basis, ask to go along and watch a class. Seek out reviews. See what other people think.
If the school doesn’t allow visitors, then think again. Why do they not want you to come and watch a class?
Why is Puppy Training Class Important to your Pup?
Class training gives your pup opportunity to socialise with other pups in a controlled environment, but it also gives your pup opportunity to learn that sometimes (s)he needs to focus on you and do the things you ask when other pups and people are around.
This is a really important factor in your pup’s training.
Puppy training, if you do the work, will make sure you can walk your dog on a lead safely and that you can get your dog back in the park. Good control and management of your dog is vital for safety of your dog and others around you.

Mental stimulation
Mental stimulation is vital for your pup. This is more important than physical exercise. Pup needs to get out and about in the world to learn all about it and understand it, but pup also needs to keep his/her brain active.
Puppy training will help with this. It gives you new skills and activities to work on as well as the training.
Keeping training going beyond puppy training provides much needed mental stimulation and reminds you to spend time doing things with your dog, not just going on walks. Walks should be fun and interactive with you.
Do Dog Trainers go to Training Classes?
Yes, we do! Most of us continue to take our dogs to training throughout their lives.
My dog is 22months old and as I’m lucky enough to be able to do it, I take him to 3 classes a week.
This is good for him and good for me. Keeps me on track and teaches him the self-control he needs around distractions.
