Toxins in Dogs
Autumn Dangers
Every season brings with it new dangers for your dog. As a dog owner you may not even realise how many things, that appear harmless, can cause serious illness, or even death for your dog. I certainly wasn’t aware of so many toxins before I became a dog trainer.
Some things can cause mild tummy upsets in dogs but other things can make a dog very poorly and can even be life-threatening. Teach your dog to ‘check in and ask permission’ before eating anything. Have a good ‘Leave it’ command as a back up.
Mould Toxin in Dogs
This is a serious, permanent danger
Any mould, at any time of year can seriously harm your dog. This might be the tiniest piece of mouldy food scavenged from a bin or found in the park. It’s a serious danger.
In Autumn, this danger is aggravated by leaf mould and mouldy fruits that have dropped from trees.
If your dog consumes anything that is mouldy please seek veterinary attention promptly.
Seasonal Plants
Every season brings new plants that are toxic to our dogs if eaten. A very toxic plant at this time of year is the Autumn Crocus. This is extremely dangerous to dogs.
Acorns and Conkers
Both of these are very dangerous to dogs, not just toxic if eaten but there are dangers in the digestion or swallowing of these autumn fruits.
If in doubt always seek medical attention for your dog.
Prompt action can save your dog’s life.
Training your dog is the best prevention
- Train your dog with a solid ‘LEAVE IT’ command.
- Train your dog to ‘check in’ with you, and ask permission before eating anything.
- Train your dog with a solid recall and STOP command.
All of these aspects of training are covered in our training programme.
