Thinking about Becoming a Dog Trainer
The most exciting and rewarding career or job
Thinking about becoming a dog trainer? Not sure how to get started or find the training?
Find out how to become a dog trainer. Being a dog trainer is as much about teaching people as it is about training dogs. Practical training is vital. You can’t learn how to become a dog trainer online.
Being happy has a serious impact on our health and well-being, so if you think being a dog trainer will make you happier read on.
There are many courses out there that give you the theory about dogs and how to train them. Do be sure to keep to positive reward based training theories.
You can study much of the theory online if that works for you, but at some point you really must gain some practical training. There aren’t very many of us doing practical training courses but you really must complete some practical training. The teaching aspect, understanding adult learning and managing groups is the key to your success as a dog trainer – even if you only intend to do one to one work.
You could of course find a local, respected dog trainer and ask to shadow and support their classes. The downside to this, is if you want to work for yourself or set up your own dog training business that won’t go down too well.
Options for Practical Training
The APDT do a practical course and that may be the one for you. The APDT still believe being a dog trainer is only a part time role and if this is what you want, then maybe that’s the course for you. We are very much focused on people earning a full time income or setting up a business.
We firmly believe, and have proven, that being a dog trainer can very quickly lead to a full time income (at senior NHS Management level) and has the potential for you to develop a business if this is what you choose to do.
Some people choose to do a course with the iMDT and then come to do our course, or the other way round. It’s not necessary to do two but there is no harm in gaining as much experience and knowledge as you possibly can.
It’s unlikely you’ll agree with everything anyone of us says, and as time goes on you’ll develop your own training ideas based on your experience.
The National Dog Training Academy course gives you the theory (online), followed by the practical aspect. You can find out more about our course using this link. We believe the difference we offer is:
- The small group experience, so you get the support you need
- The follow on support provided, to help you get started
- The opportunity to complete more specialised training at an affordable price
Once you’ve completed your training you need to get started. If you join us you are always welcome to shadow and teach in our classes if that works for you but ultimately you need to get started, even if that is with friends and family or people you know.
You really can be ready to get started, earning money, after your Level 1, 3 Days practical training.
