Dog Training – The Dog that Barks
Are you making your dog’s barking worse?
So often people will come to us for help because their dog barks at people, bikes and cars when they are out walking. They can’t understand why. They have no idea why it started.
On taking more detail we often find out that the dog has access to street-facing doors or windows. The dog spends a lot of time at the window or the door
Every time someone or something the dog is not so sure about, passes the home the dog barks.
What happens? The thing it doesn’t like or that he is unsure of goes away.
The dog has now learned that when he sees something he doesn’t like or is unsure about, if he barks it goes away.
Your dog will transfer this behaviour to other situations including when he’s out walking with you.
Keep your dog away from street-facing windows if he’s barking at things passing by.
It might mean you have to board up the bottom of all glass doors. It might mean you have to keep the curtains closed.
The trouble you go to, to keep your dog away from the door or window will be well worth it when your dog doesn’t learn to bark at everything, he doesn’t like to make it go away.
If your dog is already barking or lunging at people, cars, bikes or anything else when you are out. Seek professional help. Your dog is telling you he’s frightened, and you need to help him.
To help you understand your dog, we do a ‘without your dog’ workshop. The point of this is so you can talk, listen and interact with the small group, without worrying about your dog. Really get to the nitty gritty of how your dog learns and how you can not only stop unwanted behaviours, but how you can teach more appropriate behaviours.
Give us a call or send us an email. We can help with your dog’s barking issues.
