Become a Master Dog Trainer

So, what does it take to make a master dog trainer?

Every dog trainer must have good teaching skills, learned with hands on practical training, to accompany their dog training skills, but there are certain aspects, that will make a dog trainer stand out from the crowd.

A master dog trainer will watch, listen and learn. Watching a dog closely, understanding their body language and reactions is vital. Every dog, every class of every day will be seen as a learning experience.

Every dog, just like every person is different. So many things influence, not just the way a dog behaves, but also the way a dog will respond to training and the methods used.

When looking to train any dog, a master dog trainer will be flexible. Their lesson plans will be flexible. Their management style will be flexible. Their training methods will be flexible.

Influences on a Dog’s Behaviour

You must consider all the influences on the dog’s behaviour and the way the dog will be able to respond to the training.

This will include:

  • Genetics
  • Influence of the mother when pup was in the womb
  • Environment
  • Background
  • Social experience
  • Inherent traits of the breed(s)

You can give two dogs the same environment, socialisation and background, and get two completely different results.

A master dog trainer understands all of this and will take time to understand the dog, especially if not all of the history is available.

And of course, once you’ve mastered the dog, you then have to master the human too.

Mastering the Human

Just like a dog, there are many things influencing human behaviour, the way we understand things the way we react. To be a master dog trainer you need to understand humans as well as a dogs

Join our programme and learn from someone with not only 15 years experience in working with dogs and their owners, but someone with over 40 years experience and study into humans. Learn from someone who has 30 years experience of providing services to humans. Often working with humans who had complex needs and unrealistic expectations.

Conclusion

Becoming a master dog trainer, is not all about the dog. The human is as important as the dog. Being flexible and adaptable with both is vital if you are to become a master dog trainer. You must be prepared to evaluate all of your daily experiences – not all of them will have been good. Evaluating what worked, what didn’t work, what can you change next time, what did you miss, how could you have done better. You must be prepared to accept that the responsibility to make the training work lies with you.

A master dog trainer becomes the ‘go to person’ when many other mediocre dog trainers have failed.
