Frequently asked Questions about Becoming a Dog Trainer

Part 1 is 3 days, how long is part 2 and when does it happen?

Part 1 practical training follows the online theory part of the course. This is 3 days. Before the end of part 1, the group decide on a good time to return to complete part 2.

This is a 1 day course that also takes place in Hedge End, near Southampton.

Part 2 is usually about 3 months after completing part 1 so yo have time to gain some experience before returning.

Part 2 is about building your training activities, taking them to a bronze, silver and gold level and looking at how to work with more challenging dogs.

Is you Institution Registered with an Accrediting Body?

No we’re not. We’ve looked into this from many angles and decided it’s not appropriate for us.

We worked very closely with Chichester College a few years ago and developed our Learning Outcomes with them. This is what we work to.

Accreditation would involve creating much more written work as part of the course and finding an alternative venue. We work in a portacabin or a marquee in a field and it wouldn’t pass their requirements.

There is so much available online on the theory of becoming a dog training and dog behaviour. Being a dog trainer is as much about teaching people as it is about training dogs so our course puts the two aspects together, giving you opportunity to practise all that you learn about the dogs, teaching people and managing groups.

Do I buy Part 1 and 2 together?

Yes,  you do buy part 1 and 2 together. There is an instalment option available if you need to pay over a period of time. You can make the first payment of £320 and let me know how and when you would like to pay the remainder.

The course must be paid in full before attending part 1.

How much time does the online theory take?

The online theory needs around 6 hours to complete the ‘must do’ aspects but you will find there are links in the materials that take you to further in depth learning.

This leads you to relevant articles, looking at the debates going on in dog trainer and more in depth learning on other aspects that may be of particular interest.

Is you training all treat based?

Our training is positive reward based training but to get any dog to respond to training, as humans we need to find their motivator. The training will look at all the things that might motivate a dog and how to use them appropriately.

Dogs need consequences for their behaviour and this is a full discussion topic throughout the course.

The course is very interactive and is about group discussion.

What hours does each day run?

Generally we work from 9.30am to 4pm. Sometimes, groups decide they want to start earlier each day, so day 2 and 3 is agreed by the group. Times have to work for every person in the group.

How soon will I be able to earn money?

Every person is different. There are assessments throughout the course and we will give honest, constructive feedback to you.

Many people are ready to take on paying customers when they leave part 1. Some people do this, other people prefer to use friends and people they know to gain more experience.

My team and I will offer you full support. Often students get in touch in the period between part 1 and 2 with questions about things that have cropped up in their class sessions. The important thing is to do something, promptly, when you finish part 1 or you will lose your confidence.

We are a multi-award winning dog training academy of excellence.
